INDUSTRIAL SHORT CYBER FALLS

WHAT YOU NEED

Be sure to have everything before beginning:

* 3 plastic binders and/or folders of different colours (black, silver and transparent here), 3 meters of (flexible) watercooling tubing, 1.5 meter of split-loom cable-tidy tube, a tape of adhesive aluminium, rivets and riveting tools, nuts, a piece of an old fishnet pair of stockings and a large claw hair clip.
* scissors, a craft knife, a metal ruler, a pencil, a punch, a piece of cardboard, a darning needle, linen thread, extra strong glue and 6 clothespins.

STEP01

STEP 1:

Take your binders/ folders, your ruler and pencil. First, cut each cover of your binders/folders into large rectangles with your craft knife and a metal ruler. Use a metal ruler because you're gonna damage you ruler if it's in plastic. Then, put the cut out part in a horizontal position and draw lines with a pencil every 2.5cm.

STEP02

STEP 2:

Cut along each line using a metal ruler and the craft knife. Prefer cutting several times at the same place than pushing hard on the craft knife: the reason is you may slip away from your line if your push hard and accidentally cut either your hand or across your stripe.

STEP03

STEP 3:

Now take your split-loom cable-tidy tube and cut it to 25cm long bits, you should come to 6 of them at last.

STEP04

STEP 4:

Here you are with stripes and cut tubes. Tubes should be a little longer as they naturally curve and appear shorter.

STEP05

STEP 5:

Next step is to cut the watercooling tubes to the same size as the split-loom cable-tidy tubes, that is, 25cm. You should get 12 tubes now. Now, you've got to take your aluminium adhesive tape.

STEP06

STEP 6:

Take 5 stripes (from folders/ binders) of each sort, so you have now 15 stripes to cover with aluminium. First cut your aluminium adhesive to the right size with your craft knife.

STEP07

STEP 7:

Then, remove the non-adhesive part and get what will be the part to be seen stuck on the aluminium adhesive. Do it progressively as it has to be quite straight and get it stuck while you're removing the non-adhesive part as the adhesive part tends to curl up.

STEP08

STEP 8:

Next, get the short part stuck and push where it doesn't fold correctly to get something as flat as possible.

STEP09

STEP 9:

Then, lay your ruler along the aluminium adhesive, so as to let a part slightly shorter than your stripe width. Be sure to do it slowly since the aluminium is gonna stick on your ruler!

STEP10

STEP 10:

Now you have to cut along the ruler.

STEP11

STEP 11:

Finally, fold and stick as flatly as possible. Don't forget to fold the upper and bottom bits too.

STEP12

STEP 12:

Here is what you should obtain on the side to be seen.

STEP13

STEP 13:

It's time to gather all your stuff now: 6 bits of cable-tidy tubes, 12 bits of watercooling tubes and 15 aluminium stripes. Now choose among your three folder stripes 15 of each so that you should come with a total of 60 stripes.

STEP14

STEP 14:

Now it's time to shape your stripes. There are many shapes you can try. I decided to cut them a pointed way so I measured 3 cm at the end of the stripes on each side, then measured the middle of the stripe (1.25cm) and draw lines. Be sure to do that on the side to be hidden in the end.

STEP15

STEP 15:

This is what you should obtain. Repeat the operation on the 45 stripes (i didn't do it on the aluminium ones as it was too hard to punch and broke my machine)...yes, I know, it's a bit time-consuming!

STEP16

STEP 16:

Time to decorate now! Take your punch, your rivets, riveting tools, nuts and extra strong glue.

STEP17

STEP 17:

First, punch holes: one at the very top - which will be used to tie it later - then three others on the whole length. I chose to punch them at unequal length, there it's all about tastes!

STEP18

STEP 18:

Here is what the stripes should look like finally.

STEP19

STEP 19:

Now it's time to show you're a real Rivethead...and begin riveting! Here are the tools I used.

STEP20

STEP 20:

Take medium-sized rivets and a nut to put on the hidden part of the stripe: here is what you get. i chose to rivet on the second hole I punched.

STEP21

STEP 21:

See in this close-up: you can see both sides and some of the nuts are still visible on the transparent stripes.

STEP22

STEP 22:

To decorate your falls, you can also use nuts and extra strong glue. I personally chose to rivet most black stripes and some transparent ones and to add nuts on the other remaining black, transparent and silver ones. I added nothing on the aluminium ones.

STEP23

STEP 23:

So now you have to stick the nuts around the holes. I only stuck one per stripe on each second hole.

STEP24

STEP 24:

Now that you are done with your stripes, let's focus on the tubes. Take your tubes, linen thread, darning needle and scissors.

STEP25

STEP 25:

Then, slip the thread in the needle hole and pierce the tubes either in its horizontal or vertical width (I tried both and both work).

STEP26

STEP 26:

Next, slip only one part of the thread to the other side so as to have a bit of it on each side.

STEP27

STEP 27:

Finally, repeat the operation for each tube and be careful to do it twice for the split-loom ones.

STEP28

STEP 28:

You've finally reached the tying part! Take a piece of cardboard and put two layers of fishnet around it (it's not shown on the pic but I had to do it afterwards, so believe me and do it at once, you'll save some time). Tie the fishnet with 6 clothespins.

STEP29

STEP 29:

Then, tie each stripe or tube separately AND together. Don't hesistate to double the linen thread for to strongly tie.

STEP30

STEP 30:

Prefer tying all the stripes first so you can see more easily where it's gonna need volume. I tied in sorth of lines by bunches of four different stripes.

STEP31

STEP 31:

Next, tie the tubes in order to give volume to your falls so it's better to put them in several layers.

STEP32

STEP 32:

Finally, remove the cardboard and clothespins and take your claw clip. See on the pic, it has to be a large clip with big claws.

STEP33

STEP33:

Now, you have to slip the fishnet in the claws the nearest your material you can, especially at the top of the claw clip or else it will show up. So begin with one side of your claw clip: open it, slip the fishnet and try to slip the remnaing part behind it as I did in the pic.

STEP34

STEP 34:

Do the same thing with the second claw and be sure to do it when it's open or it will come loose. When you're finished you can tie a knot and cut off the fishnet if there is an unaesthetical bundle at the bottom of your clip.

STEP35

STEP 35:

Now you should begin to see how it will look when installed! There is some fishnet you can still see, so later I tied it higher, don't forget you have to try them once to check if there is something to improve. That's what I did, so i took pix again of the tying part (two pix above).

STEP 36:

Just wear them now!
